Some things aren’t businesses

From tr.im‘s announcement that they will keep the service alive:

Twitter has stacked the URL shortening business opportunity overwhelmingly in bit.ly’s favour

The problem with that statement is there is no such thing as a URL shortening “business.” URL shortening is a feature of a larger service or, at best, a loss leader to attract attention for your real business. (As the folks at Raven SEO Tools fully understand with their URL shortener kl.am.)

  1. Thanks for the mention Gregg! Yeah, we enjoy running kl.am, and the white labeled service that has spawned from it, but realize it’s just a facet of Raven on a whole. It is really fun to watch adoption though, and I think it took off quicker than any of us thought it would.

  2. kl.am is definitely the best URL shortening service out there. You guys are also the only one I’ve seen with a good reason for providing the service in the first place (provide a useful free tool to marketers as a way of introducing yourselves) and a rational business plan for monetizing it (the incredibly affordable white label program).

If I wasn’t so darn picky about bulk uploading, I’d already be a customer. ;) Thanks for commenting. :)
